Founded in the early 1960s by Ramsinhji Rathod, a passionate forest service official and folklorist. The museum was born out of his personal travels across the remote villages of Kutch, where he collected thousands of artifacts to save them from being lost to time. It is designed to look like a traditional Kutchi hut.
The museum houses over 4,500 artifacts across sections like Anthropology, Arts & Crafts, and Sahitya Chitra. The collection spans leather embroidery, woodwork, metal crafts, firearms, and traditional pottery, reflecting the daily lives of various Kutch tribes.
Reconstructed Bhungas & Kothala: The museum is uniquely known for its life-size Rabari and Banni Bhungas (traditional circular mud houses with mirror work) and Kothala (ancient grain storage treasuries). It also holds a rare Sahitya Chitra collection of over 1,500 volumes on regional literature.
