Established in 1982, Rupankar is a unique museum of fine arts located within the Bharat Bhavan complex on the Shyamlata Hills. It was envisioned by J. Swaminathan to bridge the gap between "high art" and "folk art." The museum provides a platform where the works of renowned modernists and indigenous tribal artists are showcased with equal prestige.
The collection is divided into two main sections: Contemporary Art and Tribal/Folk Art. It houses thousands of paintings, sculptures, and lithographs, including works by iconic Indian modernists like M.F. Husain and S.H. Raza, as well as terracotta, metal, and wood crafts from various Madhya Pradesh tribes.
The J. Swaminathan Legacy: The museum holds a definitive collection of Gond and Bhil tribal paintings that were first brought to national prominence during the museum's founding. It is uniquely famous for discovering and promoting the legendary Gond artist Jangarh Singh Shyam, whose original early works are preserved here.

| Notes | The museum building is an architectural masterpiece featuring a "sunken" design with open-to-the-sky courtyards. It operates on the philosophy that art should be experienced in a natural, non-hierarchical setting. |
