Established on November 11, 1976, the museum is located near the Kachari Chowk in Bhagalpur. It was created to preserve and showcase artifacts discovered during regional excavations, particularly from the Gupta and Pala empires. The museum highlights the artistic and religious evolution of one of Bihar’s oldest urban centers, once known as the "Silk City."
The collection consists of stone and bronze sculptures, ancient coins, terracotta artifacts, and traditional textiles. It also houses rare manuscripts and a dedicated gallery for Manjusha Art, a folk art form unique to the Anga region.
Pala-era Sculptures & Numismatics: The museum is uniquely noted for its high-quality 10th-century stone carvings and a vast collection of over 5,000 coins, including rare silver issues from the Pala dynasty. It also features a distinctive 1,000-year-old black stone Buddha depicted in the Dharmachakra Pravartana mudra.
