Established in 1981, the museum was founded to preserve the vast archaeological wealth of the Begusarai district and its surroundings. Initially operating from a rented space, it moved to its permanent home in Lohiya Nagar in 2005. It showcases artifacts spanning from the Mauryan to the Pala and British colonial periods.
The collection includes approximately 1,000 artifacts, featuring stone sculptures of Hindu and Buddhist deities, terracotta toys, ancient pottery (dating back to the Stone Age), and rare manuscripts. It also has an extensive numismatic section with ancient and medieval coins.
Pala-Period Bronzes & Coins: The museum is uniquely distinguished by its collection of over 5,000 coins, including silver coins of the Pala Empire and 13th-14th century coins of Muslim rulers. Notable stone sculptures include a 1,000-year-old black stone Buddha and 2nd-century Kali idols.
