Museum Introduction

Established in the early 1950s, the museum is located in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. It serves as a regional center for preserving the rich Buddhist heritage and Brahmanical sculptures unearthed during various excavations in the Guntur district. It is particularly valued for its collection of limestone carvings characteristic of the Amaravati school of art.

General Collections

The collection includes stone and bronze sculptures, prehistoric stone tools, ancient coins, and pottery fragments. It features a range of artifacts from the Satavahana, Ikshvaku, and Vishnukundina dynasties, as well as medieval Hindu deities.

Unique Historical Collections

Buddhist Limestone Friezes: The museum is uniquely known for its collection of white limestone panels depicting life scenes of the Buddha and Jakata tales, similar in style to those found at the world-renowned Amaravati Stupa. It also holds rare relic caskets discovered at various local stupa sites.
