Founded in 1887 by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, this museum is situated within the lush Sayaji Baug (Kamati Baug). The architecture is a striking blend of Indo-Saracenic styles, featuring intricate woodwork and brickwork. It serves as a comprehensive repository of global art, natural history, and ethnology.
The collection includes a wide range of Indian sculptures (from the Gandhara and Gupta periods), international paintings, and ethnographic objects from Japan, China, and Egypt. It also features a natural history section with diverse zoological and geological specimens.
The Egyptian Mummy & Blue Whale Skeleton: The museum uniquely houses a 2,300-year-old Egyptian mummy and a massive 22-meter-long blue whale skeleton (the largest in any Indian museum). It also preserves the famous Akota bronzes, a rare set of 5th-century Jain metallic images.
