Inaugurated on September 30, 2011, this is India's first dedicated bamboo museum. It was established by the CSIR-IHBT to demonstrate the versatility of bamboo as a sustainable "green gold" resource. The museum building itself is an architectural marvel, constructed almost entirely from treated bamboo to showcase its strength and durability.
The collection includes a wide array of bamboo-based products such as furniture, handicrafts, musical instruments, and construction materials. It also displays various bamboo species, seeds, and processed bamboo food products like pickles and candies.
Sustainable Architectural Prototype: The museum building is the largest cantilever-based bamboo structure in India, utilizing approximately 50,000 bamboo poles. It uniquely demonstrates the use of bamboo as a reinforcement material in walls, replacing traditional steel.
