Established in 1937, it is the first public museum in any Indian university. Named after educationist Sir Asutosh Mookerjee, it focuses on the preservation and study of Indian art and antiquity, particularly from Eastern India and Bengal.
The collection exceeds 25,000 items, including stone and metal sculptures, terracotta plaques, coins, seals, beads, folk art, textiles (Kantha), and traditional paintings (Mughal, Rajasthani, and Pahari).
Significant findings from archaeological excavations at sites like Chandraketugarh, Bangarh, and Paharpur; notably the earliest Buddha figure found in Bengal (2nd century AD) and unique 1st-century BC terracotta Yakshinis.
