Founded in 1940 by the "Father of Indian Prehistory," Prof. H.D. Sankalia, this museum is a specialized research institution located within the Department of Archaeology. It serves as a primary repository for artifacts recovered from landmark excavations across India. The museum is structured into nine specialized galleries that trace human evolution from the Stone Age to the Medieval period.
The collection includes Palaeolithic stone tools, Chalcolithic and Harappan pottery, Megalithic iron implements, and Early Historic sculptures. It also houses a vast numismatic collection, epigraphic records (inscriptions), and ethnographic materials representing tribal life and ancient maritime history.
Significant for housing human skeletal remains from the Mesolithic site of Langhnaj and the Chalcolithic site of Inamgaon. It also features a unique vertically wall-mounted model of the Cultural Sequence (stratigraphy) of Nevasa, illustrating roughly 400,000 years of human history.
