Museum Introduction

Established in 1946 and significantly reorganized in 2018, this museum is housed within the Lakhota Palace (Lakhota Kotha). Located on an island in the middle of Ranmal Lake, it was originally built as a fort to protect the Jamnagar rulers. It is now a protected monument under the Gujarat State Government.

General Collections

The collection includes stone and bronze sculptures from the 9th to 19th centuries, miniature paintings, glassware, and ancient coins. It also features regional textiles with embroidery, beadwork, and natural history specimens including a massive whale skeleton.

Unique Historical Collections

Features a specialized Royal Armoury containing weapons used by the Nawanagar rulers, including swords, spears, and muskets. The museum also preserves rare Copper Plates and historical documents related to the Princely State of Nawanagar.

Notes The museum building is a semi-circular bastion with thick walls designed for defense; it features a unique stone bridge connecting it to the mainland. A light and sound show narrating the history of Jamnagar is held on weekends.
