Established in 1910 by W.A. Jardine as an open-air enclosure, it was formally reorganized as a site museum in 1967. It serves as a repository for the loose sculptures and architectural fragments recovered from the Khajuraho group of temples. The museum is located near the Western Group of Temples in the Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh.
The collection comprises over 2,000 sculptures and architectural components from the 9th to 12th centuries CE. These include Brahmanical (Shaiva, Vaishnava, Shakta), Jaina, and Buddhist iconographies carved in the local fine-grained sandstone.
A rare life-size 11th-century sandstone sculpture of a 12-armed seated Lord Ganesha and an intricate image of a four-headed Vaikuntha Vishnu (featuring human, lion, boar, and horse heads).
