Museum Introduction

Established in November 2004, this museum is situated adjacent to the excavated remains of the ancient Vikramshila University. It was built to preserve and display the vast number of antiquities unearthed during excavations conducted by the Archaeological Survey of India between 1972 and 1982. The museum is a crucial center for understanding the Pala-period Buddhist heritage.

General Collections

The collection includes stone and bronze sculptures, terracotta plaques, and diverse minor antiquities. It features images of Buddhist and Brahmanical deities, as well as everyday objects like iron implements, shell ornaments, and stone inscriptions from the 8th to 12th centuries CE.

Unique Historical Collections

Terracotta Plaques and Scale Model: A significant collection of artistic terracotta plaques that once adorned the walls of the great Stupa. The museum also houses a large-scale structural model of the excavated Vikramshila monastic complex, providing a complete spatial view of the university.
