Museum Introduction

Established in 1964 and reorganized in 1981–82, this museum is housed in the former convent attached to the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in Old Goa. It serves as a primary repository for artifacts spanning Goa's prehistoric, early historic, and colonial periods. The museum is a key component of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Old Goa.

General Collections

The collection is spread across eight galleries featuring Hindu and Jain sculptures, Sati stones, Hero stones, and Portuguese-era artifacts. It also includes Arabic and Persian inscriptions, medieval weaponry, and numismatic exhibits.

Unique Historical Collections

Portrait Gallery of Viceroys: A distinctive and historically significant collection of 60 portrait paintings of Portuguese Viceroys and Governors of Goa, documenting over 400 years of colonial administration.
