Museum Introduction

Established in 1956, this site museum is located near the Mahabodhi Temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was founded to house and preserve the antiquities excavated from Bodhgaya and surrounding areas. The museum serves as a critical repository for Buddhist and Brahmanical art.

General Collections

The collection comprises stone and bronze sculptures, terracotta items, and coins ranging from the 2nd century BCE to the 11th century CE. It includes artifacts from the Sunga, Mauryan, Gupta, and Pala periods.

Unique Historical Collections

Ancient Stone Railings: The museum houses the original 2nd-century BCE Sunga-period sandstone railings and 7th-century CE granite railings that once enclosed the Mahabodhi Temple.
