Museum Introduction

The 1857 Memorial Museum, located in the Residency complex built for British Residents in Awadh,through its galleries A-K showcases the impact of the First War of Independence.

General Collections

The museum features galleries A-C displaying lithographs related to the siege and prominent figures such as Wajid Ali Shah and Rani Laxmi Bai. Gallery D includes high relief sculptures of Sir Henry Lawrence and Miss Susanna Palmer, both casualties of the siege. Galleries E-K exhibit various artifacts, including weapons and dioramas of battle scenes.There are three translites on display of the Dilkusha Kothi, Rumi Gate and an aerial view of the Bara Imambara in Hussainabad.

Notes The museum, under the management of the Archaeological Survey of India, organises heritage walks and museum tours, and has a 15-minute documentary on the Residency and its historical relevance. It also organises events on national holidays like Independence Day and Republic Day for school children.
