Museum Introduction

Jorasanko Thakur Bari is the ancestral home of the Tagore family and the birthplace of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Built in the 18th century by Prince Dwarkanath Tagore, the sprawling red-brick mansion was converted into a museum in 1961 to commemorate Tagore's birth centenary. It now functions as a premier cultural center under the aegis of Rabindra Bharati University.

General Collections

The museum houses an extensive collection of personal memorabilia, including Rabindranath Tagore's furniture, books, manuscripts, and over 40 original paintings by the poet. It also features galleries dedicated to other prominent family members like Abanindranath and Gaganendranath Tagore, showcasing the evolution of the Bengal School of Art.

Unique Historical Collections

The "Birthing Room" and the "Death Room" (where Tagore breathed his last) are preserved with original period settings. It also contains rare photographs documenting the Tagore family’s interactions with global figures like Albert Einstein and W.B. Yeats.
