Founded by Sir Cowasji Jehangir at the urging of Homi Bhabha and Karl Khandalavala, this premier institution was inaugurated on January 21, 1952. Located in the Kala Ghoda precinct, it has served as a primary platform for the evolution of contemporary Indian art for over seven decades. The gallery is architecturally significant as an early example of modernist concrete construction in Mumbai.
The gallery does not maintain a permanent collection but functions as an exhibition venue for rotating contemporary and modern artworks. It features seven exhibition halls, including the Auditorium Hall, Exhibition Gallery, and the Hirji Jehangir Gallery, hosting works ranging from paintings and sculptures to photography and ceramics.
While primarily a rental gallery, it is historically unique for its "Pavement Gallery," where aspiring artists who cannot afford indoor space exhibit their work along the gallery’s outer walls, a tradition central to Mumbai's democratic art culture.

| Notes | The gallery is a centerpiece of the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival. It is notably designed without a traditional facade; instead, it is set back from the road behind a landscaped entrance, reflecting its modernist aesthetic. |
