Established in 1971 by the Anthropological Survey of India (Northwest Regional Centre), this museum is dedicated to the study and preservation of the biocultural heritage of the Himalayan region. It highlights the lifestyle, traditions, and evolution of the diverse tribes inhabiting North India.
The museum displays a wide array of tribal artifacts, including traditional costumes, jewelry, hunting gear, musical instruments, and household utensils. It also features life-sized dioramas depicting the daily lives of indigenous communities.
It houses an extensive ethnographic collection focused on the tribes of the Western Himalayas, specifically the Tharu, Jaunsari, Buksa, Bhotia, and Raji (the "Van Rawat" or kings of the forest).
