Museum Introduction

Built in 1861 by Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar III, the Jaganmohan Palace is a three-story architectural masterpiece constructed in the traditional Hindu style. It served as the primary royal residence from 1897 to 1912 after the old wooden Mysore Palace was destroyed by fire. In 1915, the palace was converted into the Sri Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery to preserve the royal art collection and cultural legacy of the Wodeyar dynasty.

General Collections

The museum houses one of the largest collections of artifacts in South India, exceeding 2,000 items. This includes traditional Mysore paintings, Mughal and Shantiniketan schools of art, antique furniture, rare coins, and a specialized room for musical instruments from across the globe.

Unique Historical Collections

Features the world-famous "Glow of Hope" (often called Lady with the Lamp) by S.L. Haldankar, exhibited in a darkened room to create an illusion of real light. It also holds a significant collection of original works by Raja Ravi Varma and a French clock mechanism that stages a miniature soldier parade every hour.
