Established in 1961 and located along the historic Chandannagar Strand, the Institut de Chandernagore is one of the oldest museums in West Bengal. It is housed in the Dupleix Palace, the former residence of Joseph François Dupleix, the Governor-General of French India in the 1740s. The institute serves as a premier center for Indo-French cultural studies and preserves the unique colonial heritage of this former French enclave.
The museum houses a vast collection of French antiques, including 18th-century wooden furniture, maps of colonial Bengal, and household items used by French officials. It also features a significant gallery of stone sculptures from the 8th to 12th centuries and relics from the local struggle for independence.
Features the personal belongings of Governor Dupleix, including a rare marble bust of him. It also preserves 18th-century cannons used during the Anglo-French wars (Carnatic Wars) and rare archival documents related to French administration in India.
