Established in 1977 and spread over 200 acres on the Shamla Hills overlooking the Upper Lake, this is the largest anthropological museum in India. It is designed to document the story of mankind in time and space, emphasizing the biological and cultural evolution of Indian populations through a unique "open-air" exhibition format.
The museum features both indoor and outdoor galleries. The indoor gallery, 'Veerashat,' houses a vast collection of ethnographic objects, while the outdoor exhibitions consist of life-size dwellings, rock art shelters, and traditional architectural structures from across India.
The museum preserves a series of prehistoric rock shelters with original Mesolithic rock paintings situated within the campus. It also features the 'Mythological Trail', showcasing the diverse oral traditions and cosmological beliefs of various Indian tribes.
