Founded in 1814 by the Asiatic Society of Bengal, the Indian Museum is the oldest and largest multipurpose museum in the Asia-Pacific region. Housed in an iconic Neoclassical building designed by Walter B. Granville, it serves as the premier national institution for the preservation of India's cultural and natural heritage.
Over 100,000 exhibits categorized into six sections: Art, Archaeology, Anthropology, Geology, Zoology, and Economic Botany. It features rare antiques, Mughal and Bengal School paintings, prehistoric fossils, and a comprehensive collection of Indian flora and fauna.
The museum houses one of the most significant Egyptian collections in Asia, including a 4,000-year-old mummy. It also preserves the Bharhut Gallery, which contains the original railings and gateway of the 2nd-century BCE Bharhut Stupa.
