Founded in 1911 in Madras and moved to Kakinada in 1919, this institution was taken over by the Government of Andhra Pradesh in 1973. It is a premier center for the preservation of Telugu literary heritage and regional archaeology.
The museum houses a massive library of 10,000 rare books and nearly 5,000 palm-leaf and paper manuscripts. The archaeological section contains 393 artifacts, including stone sculptures, terracotta figurines, and ancient coins.
It preserves the original palm-leaf manuscripts of legendary Telugu literature and a rare collection of Eastern Chalukyan gold coins, alongside stone sculptures of Chalukya Bhima and Mahavira.
