Museum Introduction

Inaugurated on December 8, 2017, the High Court of Sikkim Museum is located in the serene environs of Gangtok. It is housed in a heritage bungalow built in 1910, which originally served as the residence for the Civil Surgeon and later the Chief Justice of Sikkim. The museum was established to document and preserve the unique legal history of Sikkim, which transitioned from a monarchy to the 22nd state of the Indian Union.

General Collections

The museum features five specialized galleries showcasing the judicial history of Sikkim across three periods: Pre-monarchy, Monarchy (Chogyal era), and Post-merger. The collection includes rare legal documents, historical photographs of heritage buildings, and artifacts illustrating the administration of justice. It also contains a significant archaeological section with stone tools.

Unique Historical Collections

Ancient Sixteen Laws: Exhibits detailing the traditional "Sikhim Laws" believed to have originated from Raja Melongdong. Neolithic Tools: A display of stone tools discovered in Sikkim that date human habitation in the region back to 10,000 BCE. Mock Courtroom: A simulated environment that allows visitors to witness a courtroom setting. Royal Documents: Original judgments and administrative decrees from the era of the Chogyals.
