Opened on January 14, 1962, in Bagnan, Howrah, this museum was established to preserve and showcase the cultural and historical heritage of rural Bengal. It was founded through the dedicated efforts of local enthusiasts, including the noted historian Sri Tarapada Santra.
The collection includes stone sculptures, ancient pottery, bronze icons, temple terracotta plaques, wooden artifacts, and traditional textiles. It also houses a significant number of old Bengali and Sanskrit manuscripts.
It features a rare and distinctive collection of Pattachitra (painted scrolls) and recitals by the Chitrakar community, alongside a notable Jain Tirthankara image recovered from Sabang.
