Museum Introduction

Established in 1961 and opened to the public in 1966, the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya in Barrackpore (near Kolkata) is the premier Gandhian memorial for the Eastern Zone of India. Housed in a historic bungalow on the banks of the Hooghly River, it was developed to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi's extensive work in Bengal and his commitment to communal harmony, particularly during the period of 1946-47.

General Collections

The museum features five main galleries that house a vast collection of rare photographs, manuscripts, and personal belongings. The exhibits provide a detailed narrative of the Indian independence movement, with specialized sections focusing on Gandhi's life as a student, his Satyagraha movements, and his specific interactions with the people and leaders of Bengal.

Unique Historical Collections

81-Foot Mural: A world-record-length continuous mural by artist Dinendranath Brahma depicting the life of the Mahatma. Noakhali Section: A poignant collection of documents and photographs related to Gandhi’s peace mission in Noakhali.
