Established in 1955, Gandhi Smriti in Bhavnagar is a living memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, who shared a deep personal connection with the city through his studies at Samaldas Arts College. Located in the heart of the city near the Crescent Circle, the complex commemorates his life and services while housing the Barton Museum, one of the oldest museums in the Saurashtra region.
The museum features two distinct levels. The ground floor houses the Barton Museum, containing a repertoire of archaeological remains and regional crafts. The first floor is dedicated to the Gandhi Museum, featuring a comprehensive picture gallery documenting Gandhi’s life from birth to death, along with rare books and personal memorabilia.
Bhavnagar Student Records: Rare documents and evidence of Gandhi’s period as a student in the city. Saurashtra Artifacts: A collection of religious carvings, ancient weapons, and a notable "skeleton in a cupboard." Beadwork & Textiles: Exquisite 19th-century Venetian-Murano beadwork and traditional embroidery currently undergoing restoration.
