Officially the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya, this institution is located in Barrackpore, near Kolkata. Established in 1961 (opened to the public in 1966), it serves as the regional memorial for the Eastern Zone. It is housed in a historic bungalow along the Hooghly River, honoring Gandhi’s frequent visits to Bengal and his work during the freedom struggle.
The museum spans five primary galleries. It contains an extensive collection of rare photographs, original letters, and personal items. The exhibits focus on Gandhi's life, his philosophy, and his deep connection to the events in Bengal and Noakhali.
81-Foot Mural: A massive, continuous mural by artist Dinendranath Brahma depicting the life and message of the Mahatma. Personal Relics: Plaster cast replicas of Gandhi's personal items and original correspondence. Bengal Gallery: Dedicated specifically to Gandhi’s initiatives and movements within the Eastern region of India.
