Museum Introduction

Established in 1968, the Fine Arts Museum is a part of the Department of Art History and Visual Arts at Panjab University, Chandigarh. The building is an architectural landmark designed by Pierre Jeanneret, characterized by a series of small interlocking galleries surrounding a central courtyard. It was created to foster an environment for the study and appreciation of modern Indian art within an academic setting.

General Collections

The museum houses a significant collection of nearly 1,300 works of contemporary Indian art. This includes paintings, sculptures, graphics, and drawings. The collection is curated to represent the evolution of Indian art from the early 20th century to the present day, with a strong focus on the post-independence era and the "Progressive Artists' Group."

Unique Historical Collections

Modern Masters: Original works by Jamini Roy, M.F. Husain, F.N. Souza, and Amrita Sher-Gil. The Jeanneret Design: The museum building itself is a "living" exhibit of the Chandigarh Architecture style, utilizing natural skylights and frosted glass to illuminate artworks. Graphics Section: One of the most comprehensive collections of contemporary Indian graphic prints in Northern India.
