Opened on February 27, 1987, the District Science Centre, Tirunelveli is a vital unit of the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM). Located on the banks of the Thamirabarani River, it aims to popularize science and technology through interactive exhibits and participatory learning modules for students and the general public.
The centre features four permanent galleries: Fun Science, Popular Science, Electronics, and a New Wing of Electronics. The collection includes hands-on exhibits that demonstrate fundamental principles of physics, mechanics, and modern electronic applications.
Space Technology Gallery: A newly inaugurated (Nov 2024) gallery featuring scaled models of satellites, rocket components, and actual materials used in real-life space missions. Digital Planetarium: A high-tech immersive facility for astronomical shows. Pre-historic Park: A specialized outdoor area featuring animated models of dinosaurs and prehistoric animals with movement and sound.
