Museum Introduction

Established in 1966 in Injambakkam, Chennai, Cholamandal Artists Village was founded to give artists financial independence through the sale of handicrafts. It is the birthplace of the Madras School of Art, blending traditional Indian motifs with modern abstraction.

General Collections

The complex features two main galleries - the Laburnum and Indigo galleries - along with an extensive International Sculpture Park. The collection consists of paintings, copper-sheet works, wood carvings, and terracotta sculptures created by resident and guest artists.

Unique Historical Collections

Permanent Collection of the Madras Movement: Houses seminal works by the founders, including K.C.S. Paniker, S. Dhanapal, and K. Ramanujam. It is specifically noted for its Copper Relief works, a signature technique developed here to combine craft with high art.
