Founded in 1905 to commemorate the visit of the Prince of Wales (King George V), the museum was opened to the public in 1922. It was renamed in 1998 after the founder of the Maratha Empire. It is set in a lush garden "Crescent Site" near the Gateway of India.
The museum houses over 70,000 artifacts across three main sections: Art, Archaeology, and Natural History. It covers everything from the Indus Valley Civilization to the colonial era.
Sir Ratan & Sir Dorabji Tata Collection: An immense bequest of European paintings, Chinese and Japanese antiquities, and Indian jade. Akbar’s Armour: The personal breastplate and helmet of the Mughal Emperor. Buddhist Artifacts: Relics from the 5th-century stupa of Mirpurkhas.
