Established in 1929 by the Holkar State, the Central Museum, Indore is one of the oldest museums in the state. It was created to preserve the diverse archaeological wealth found across the Malwa plateau, including sculptures, coins, and ancient tools.
The museum is divided into two main wings. One wing houses artifacts from the prehistoric era (stone tools and fossils), while the other is dedicated to Hindu and Jain sculptures from the medieval period.
Parmar Dynasty Sculptures: The museum boasts one of the world's finest collections of medieval Hindu and Jain sculptures belonging to the Parmar period (11th–12th century), specifically those recovered from Hinglajgarh. It also features rare Gupta-era copper plates.
