Established in 1971 by the Birla Foundation, the museum was created to showcase the rich cultural heritage and archaeological wealth of Madhya Pradesh. It is situated on a hillock, offering a panoramic view of the Upper and Lower Lakes of Bhopal.
The museum spans the prehistoric era to the 13th century. It features tools from the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods, ancient coins, manuscripts, terracotta objects, and a significant collection of stone sculptures from various parts of the state.
Ashapuri Sculptures: The museum is uniquely famous for its collection from the Ashapuri and Hinglajgarh excavations, particularly the 10th-11th century sculptures of Dancing Ganesha and Uma-Maheshwara. It also houses a detailed scale model of the Bhimbetka rock shelters.

| Notes | The museum is relatively small but highly dense with information. It is unique for its "Devi Art" displays made from subabul leaves and its focus on the Paramara dynasty of Malwa. It is often visited alongside the adjacent Lakshmi Narayan Temple. |
