BITM was inaugurated on May 2, 1959, by Prof. Humayun Kabir. The idea was pioneered by Dr. B.C. Roy, who envisioned a space to popularize science. The museum is housed in the former "Birla Park," a sprawling colonial-style bungalow donated by Shri G.D. Birla to the government in 1956.
The museum features 12 interactive galleries covering themes such as Fascinating Physics, Electricity, Transport, Metals, and Life Science. It is designed to be highly hands-on, encouraging visitors to participate in experiments rather than just observe.
Underground Mock-up Coal Mine: BITM houses India's first and most famous underground mock-up coal mine, providing a realistic experience of mining conditions and equipment. It also features a unique Vintage Voyage gallery showcasing rare communication technology.
