Founded in 1967 by the industrialist couple Basant Kumar and Sarala Birla, the academy was established to bridge the gap between India's classical past and the modern artistic movement. It occupies a multi-story building on Southern Avenue and serves as a vital platform for young artists through its prestigious "All India Annual Exhibition."
The museum spans several floors: the ground floor houses Ancient Sculptures (2nd Century BC to 18th Century AD); the 3rd floor is dedicated to Miniature Paintings and manuscripts; and the 5th floor features a Contemporary Gallery showcasing modern Indian masters.
Pahari Miniatures & Chamba Art: The museum is uniquely noted for its rare collection of Himachali paintings from the Chamba district and a spectacular set of Durga Saptashati miniature paintings. It also features international modern art, having hosted original works by Picasso, Rodin, and Henry Moore.
